Save on Potencia.

The very special thing about the Spanish electricity bill, compared to an English electricity bill, is the concept of “Potencia”. Potencia is measured in KW, and is in fact the maximum power you can draw from the power grid without your ICP device cutting out. Your ICP device should not be confused with a normal UK HFI relay. The ICP relay is a financial relay that turns off so that you can’t pull more power out of the grid than you pay for. If you stick “two fingers” in your socket, it’s your main relay that turns off – it reacts (thankfully) much faster than your ICP relay.

There may be money to be saved on potencia.

It is therefore important to subscribe to the right number of KW potencia, because it can save both money and irritation.

HOW MUCH “POTENCIA” YOU CAN SUBSCRIBE TO IS DETERMINED BY AN AUTHORIZED ELECTRICIAN WHO, WITH HIS SIGNATURE, CERTIFIES THAT THE ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION IN YOUR PROPERTY IS IN ORDER AND CAN BE PUT INTO USE.

How much potencia you can subscribe to depends on several factors, such as what kind of contacts there are in the property, how thick cables are pulled in the property, how is the insulation, etc.

The electrician certifies your maximum number of KW in a document widely known as “El Boletin”, but more specifically called CIE: “Certificado de Instalación Eléctrica”. In Catalonia, it is shortened to BRIE or BIE.

Many electricians who help the customer create an electricity contract often send the maximum number of KW for which the property is certified to the electricity company, although in many (very many) cases the property may in fact only need half. The property’s residents live with and pay for, far too much “potencia” for years until someone starts to take an interest in that part of the electricity bill.

You can estimate how many KW potencia you need by looking at what you have of electrical installations in your property (stove, water heater, heat pump/air-con), underfloor heating, freezer, refrigerator, etc).

Check their maximum consumption in KW (that’s when you turn up completely or switch on the unit), and then try to imagine how many of the units you want turned on at once. It will often suffice with 10% more potencia than the number you arrive at.

But remember: it’s only a rule of thumb!

As a Costa Energia client, you are always welcome to contact us for help on how many KW you should subscribe to, but it is quite certain that if your relay turns off too often, you subscribe to too little potencia or there is a transition in some device in your house.

The soaring electricity prices continue…..

The soaring electricity prices continue…..

By G. Uth - 12. October 2021 - The soaring electricity prices continue…Barely three weeks ago, Sanchez and his Sanchitos announced that they could now guarantee that the general citizen's electricity bill would be 20-25% lower.    It was (once again) another a promise...

Why are electricity prices exploding?

By G. Uth - 03. October 2021 - Why are electricity prices exploding? In recent months, electricity prices in Spain have risen to unprecedented levels, but why are prices rising so much and why are the wrong actions being taken in an attempt to slow down the soaring...

But remember: it’s just a rule of thumb!
